Kansas GOP Decries Federal Abortion-Rights Measure

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ The Kansas Republican Party declares its
"fierce opposition'' to abortion rights legislation long pending
in Congress.

The party's State Committee unanimously adopted a resolution
Saturday criticizing the proposed federal Freedom of Choice Act.

The GOP's resolution says the proposal is misnamed. The proposal
probably would sweep away scores of state laws restricting
abortion, including parental notification requirements and
mandatory waiting periods before an abortion.

The GOP resolution also says the measure would lead to taxpayer
funding of abortions.

The resolution said: ``The Freedom of Choice Act is an assault
on states rights in the worst sense imaginable.''
