Delano Lewis was born in Arkansas City, Kansas in 1938, and was raised in the Kansas City area, graduating from Sumner High School in KC. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from KU in Political Science and History, he was awarded his Law Degree from Washburn University.

His career began with his work in 1963 as a staff attorney for the Justice Department. During the late 60s, Delano Lewis served for the Peace Corps in Africa. Serving on numerous telecommunications company boards, Lewis was named President and CEO of National Public Radio in 1994. It's now been nine years since he was tapped to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to South Africa, appointed by President Bill Clinton. He retired from diplomatic service just before 9/11.

Lewis now lives in Mesilla, New Mexico with his wife Gayle. The Lewis' have four adult sons, and 11 grandchildren. One of their sons is actor Phill Lewis, who currently stars in "The Suite Life of Zach and Cody," one of the hits on the Disney Channel!
