The list of finalists for the Kansas State University president's post is down to two.

Dr. Steve Ballard announced Thursday he was withdrawing his candidacy. He says he simply feels he's a better fit at East Carolina University, where he's the chancellor.

"You always learn something interviewing for competitive positions, and this one reminded me what a great place ECU is and how much I like working with the people here," Ballard said in a statement.

Ballard was one of three finalists who visited the Manhattan campus this month.

University of Maine President, Dr. Robert Kennedy, and Dr. Kirk Schulz, VP for Research at Mississippi State, remain in the running to replace Dr. Jon Wefald. Wefald is retiring in May.
