Emergency crews late Monday recovered the body of a man killed in a trench collapse earlier in the day.

Pottawatomie County Sheriff Greg Riat says the collapse happened around 1:45 pm Monday on Excel Road, about a mile off Highway 24 east of Manhattan.

A man in his 20s was working at a new house construction site, setting plumbing line in a trench. Riat says the man was alone in the trench at the time. It's not known how long he was there before he was discovered.

The victim has been identified as Christopher Kramer, 25 year old male of Alta Vista Kansas.

Riat says rescue crews spent hours digging bucket by bucket to reach the victim in a hole more than ten feet deep. Concern of further collapsed slowed the effort. The body was recovered just after 10:30 pm Monday.

Riat says authorities hoped to release further details, including the victim's identity, Tuesday morning.
