Kansas Bill Would Ban Lighter Sales to Minors

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ A Kansas state senator wants to ban the sale
of cigarette lighters to minors.

Sen. Oletha Faust-Goudeau, a Wichita Democrat, also wants to require retailers to keep lighters behind their counters, just as they do with cigarettes.

Her bill was introduced Monday in the Senate.

Faust-Goudeau said Wichita fire officials approached her about lighter sales. She said there are numerous instances in which children start fires with lighters.

The senator said they're readily available at discount stores and that the stores often have trouble with them being stolen.
