Hazmat Responds to Downtown Diesel Spill

TOPEKA, Kan.- An oil spill at Topeka Transit forced fire crews to call in hazmat Monday afternoon.

It happened in the 200 block of North Kansas Avenue around 1 p.m.
Battalion Chief Greg Bailey says when they arrived on scene about 600 to 800 gallons of diesel fuel had spilled on the ground around a diesel tank used to fuel buses.

Officials say the spill was immediately contained, and that Hazmat crews were called in to clean up the spill.

Shawnee County Emergency Management, KDHE, and Water Pollution Control all assisted in the clean up.

The Salvation Army also stopped by to provide food for crews.
