Two Kansas Prison Unit Closings Accelerated

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ The Department of Corrections is closing two of its prison units sooner than planned.

The department said Friday that it's Lansing Correctional Facility unit at Osawatomie will close Feb. 6 and its El Dorado Correctional Facility unit at Toronto will close Feb. 27. Both had been scheduled to close April 1.

Corrections Secretary Roger Werholtz said closing the facilities sooner will enable the agency to further reduce spending in the current budget year. He said the move will come sooner because of available space at other prisons and open staff positions at other locations.

Seventy-four inmates are at Osawotomie and 62 are at Toronto. The department has capacity for 8,402 male inmates and currently has 7,864.
