LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) _ A $13,000 state grant will help Lawrence fund a three-day cycling race expected to attract 800 cyclists to
the city on the Fourth of July weekend.

The event -- dubbed the Tour of Lawrence -- would feature races
downtown and on the University of Kansas campus from July 3 to July
5.

The Lawrence Convention and Visitors Bureau said the event would
fill hotel rooms, restaurants and stores on a weekend that's
typically slow for Lawrence businesses. The bureau is trying to
raise about $60,000 to ensure the event can happen.

Bob Sanner of the nonprofit Lawrence Sports Corp. said several professional teams have expressed interest in taking part.

The races would be during the Tour de France, and several pro teams that don't qualify for that race may be looking for an event.
