Consumers are being warned to avoid any food in which peanut butter is an ingredient. The current national recall does not include peanut butter in jars sold in stores.
The outbreak is believed to have killed at least six people and sickened nearly 500 in 43 states. At least 90 people have been hospitalized.
Salmonella bacteria can cause gastrointestinal illness in adults and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or older people and those with weakened immune systems.
A spokeswoman for the Girl Scouts in northwestern Missouri and
northeastern Kansas say their cookies are safe.
