Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday is being celebrated nationally and in Topeka. The 16th annual Community Celebration of King's birthday was held at First Presbyterian Church Monday evening.

Visitors enjoyed a soup dinner followed by a presentation. Rev. Bradley Walker of First Presbyterian Church welcomed guests and gave the Invocation to begin the celebration. Hundreds of people applauded when Alexis Jones sang the "Star Spangled Banner" and they chimed in to "Lift Every Voice" and "We Shall Overcome".

Washburn University President Jerry Farley was the guest speaker. His message was that education encourages change.
