Saudi Man Beheaded for Killing Compatriot

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) -- Authorities in Saudi Arabia have beheaded a Saudi man convicted of killing a fellow national after a dispute.

An Interior Ministry statement Thursday says Mushabeb Al-Ahmari was executed in the southern province of Asir. He was convicted of killing a compatriot using a machine gun. The statement did not explain the nature of the dispute.

Al-Ahmari was a minor when he was sentenced. The statement said his execution was delayed until he came of age. It is not clear when he was sentenced.

The kingdom follows a strict interpretation of Islam under which people convicted of murder, rape and armed robbery can be executed with a sword.

According to an Associated Press count, this is the fifth execution this year. In 2008, 102 people were beheaded.
