Topeka police are warning local merchants and financial institutions about a new scam involving pre-paid credit cards.
The cards, usually Green Dot brand, are given to a clerk or cashier with the magnetic strip will not swipe, the perpetrator tells the cashier that the number on the back was provided by the company and that it just needs to be hand-entered.
The number is a legitimate number taken from another credit card, allowing the purchase to go through.
Police are encouraging merchants not to accept such packaging as payment.
