LEAVENWORTH, Kansas (AP) A 28-year-old Leavenworth man is jailed on charges that he stabbed his stepfather with the broken handle of a toilet plunger.

Brett Allen Burns appeared Wednesday in Leavenworth County District Court, after returning from the state hospital in Larned where he underwent a psychological evaluation. He's charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder.

He was arrested after an altercation on Jan. 20, 2008, with his stepfather and mother in Leavenworth. Burns is also charged with threatening a police officer after the incident.

A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Feb. 5. Burns' mental competency is expected to be discussed at the hearing.
