Fifty-four-year-old Pete Souza first served as chief White House photographer for the late President Ronald Reagan. This week Souza accepted the request of President-elect Barack Obama to return to the White House in the same capacity.
Souza told the News Tuesday that the invitation came in a telephone call from Robert Gibbs, incoming White House press secretary.
Souza worked at The News from June 1979 through November 1980. He later worked for the Chicago Sun-Times, where he met newly elected Sen. Barack Obama and chronicled the president-elect's first Senate year in a collection titled "The Rise of Barack Obama.''
