Reno DA to Seek "Hard 50'' in Hutch Murder

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) _ Reno County prosecutors say they'll seek a "hard 50'' prison sentence for a Wichita man if convicted of first-degree murder.

District Attorney Keith Schroeder filed a notice of intent to seek the extended sentence Monday for 29-year-old Felton Williams Jr. Williams and Ronald Beard are accused in the Sept. 1 shooting death of Kenneth White at his home in Hutchinson.

Both Williams and Beard pleaded not guilty Monday. A third defendant, 19-year-old Aubrey Oliver. agreed to plead guilty to a lesser charge in exchange for his testimony.

Oliver said White threatened Williams' cousin.

The motion allows prosecutors to ask a judge to impose a sentence of 50 years without possibility of parole in the event of a conviction. The standard sentence for first-degree murder is 25 years without parole.
