The entire state of Kansas is now under a drought warning. Governor Sebelius Monday upgraded the drought status of 25 counties in northeast and east central Kansas from watch to warning. As a result, all of Kansas is now under a drought warning. A drought warning means public water suppliers may impose mandatory water use restrictions. Surplus water contracts from state controlled storage also may be authorized.
The Governor's action followed a recommendation made last week by the Drought Response Team. Experts told the Drought Response Team that there have been hotter and drier summers, but this summer has seen a record number of streams that are not meeting flow levels.
