Lawsuit Accuses Military of Converting Afghans

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ A group and a Fort Riley soldier expand a federal lawsuit against Defense Secretary Robert Gates over allegations of religious discrimination in the military

The lawsuit now includes allegations that the military doesn't take such complaints seriously enough and that soldiers try to convert Muslims in Iraq and Afghanistan to Christianity.

The lawsuit was filed in September in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kan., by Spc. Dustin Chalker and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation. They filed an amended version Monday.

Chalker is an atheist, but the foundation says it represents mostly Christians upset by violations of religious freedoms.

A Defense Department spokeswoman wouldn't comment on the new claims but says the military respects religious freedoms.
