Topeka USD 501 Agree to Buy Old State Hospital Property

Topeka USD 501 school board members Thursday agreed to pay two-and-a-quarter million dollars for the old Topeka State Hospital property.

The purchase includes 152 acres of the former Topeka State Hospital land, adjacent to the school district's Hummer Sports Park. We took a tour of the land with Superintendent Kevin Singer in October.

Singer said the money will be paid over 10 years with none of it coming from the general fund or from teacher's salaries. The school board had said they envision the area becoming an education-centered campus focusing on the use of renewable energy.
