New Wichita Manager to Start Work in February

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ Wichita finally has a new city manager.

The City Council announced Thursday that it had hired Robert Layton for the job, which has been vacant since January. Layton is the city manager in Urbandale, Iowa. He begins work in Wichita on Feb. 2.

Layton will be paid $185,000 a year, plus a $550 monthly car allowance and other benefits.

The council voted 6-1 to approve his contract.

The 53-year-old Layton has been city manager of Urbandale since 1984. The city of 40,000 is near Des Moines, Iowa.

He also served four years as a senior administrative assistant to the Des Moines city manager and was an intern budget analyst in Kansas City, Mo., from 1978 to 1980.

In Wichita, Layton will oversee 3,100 employees and a $500 million annual budget.
