Winter Storm Snarls Traffic Across Kansas

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ Wichita police say a man is dead after
driving at high speed on a snow-packed road and crashing into a
tree late Monday night.

That appears to be the only fatal accident attributed to a
snowstorm that has moved across Kansas and into western Missouri,
according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Police Sgt. Jim Merrick says the car that crashed may have been
going around 70 mph down a city street in northwest Wichita, and
the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Elsewhere, traffic was moving slowly in much of the state and
dozens of schools closed for the day because of the winter storm,
which was expected to drop from 2 to 5 inches of snow before it
tapers off in the afternoon.

The Highway Patrol says no fatal accidents had been reported as
of 9 a.m. Tuesday.
