Crews are working to turn up the heat on an icy mess in the Montara neighborhood.
City officials say a plumber hit a water main around 10:30 am Monday near 69th and Clearview in south Topeka. Water shot 25 feet into the air for 20 minutes, freezing instantly in the frigid temperatures. The ice is coating cars and tree limbs, causing some of the limbs to break under the weight. A portion of the street is more like an ice rink.
Crews are on the scene working to fix the break and take steps to keep the tree limbs from causing additional problems. City officials say it will be several more hours until they have water restored to all the residents.
13 News has a crew on the scene and will bring you the latest on 13 News at 5 and 6.
