Bicycle Death Changes Policy

Some parents say Lawrence school officials overreacted to a tragedy.
A kindergartner was killed in January riding his scooter from home to class. Soon the school district had a new rule -- students younger than third grade can't ride bikes or scooters to school.
And it doesn't matter how short the distance from home and which school they go to.
Dave Stevens -- whose stepson is a first-grader -- said the new rule is an inconvenience for the boy and the family.
But other parents and school and safety officials said the new rules only make sense.
The policy was changed after the January 31st death of six-year-old Bryce Olsen, who was struck by a minivan while riding his scooter to school.
The boy's father said he's glad something is being done about traffic safety.
