GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba (AP) _ The Guantanamo 9/11
trials are in disarray, after Khalid Sheikh Mohammed said he'll confess to masterminding the attacks.
Four other accused terrorists are also abandoning their defenses, in effect daring the Pentagon to grant their wish for martyrdom.
The judge ordered lawyers to advise him by Jan. 4 whether the Pentagon can apply the death penalty without a jury trial.
The chief prosecutor says he expects a jury to be created to hear evidence in a sentencing phase of the trial and decide on punishment.
President-elect Barack Obama opposes the trials and has pledged to close the Guantanomo detention center.
Even if trials are held, it's unlikely any would be completed before Obama takes office on Jan. 20.
