Kan. GOP Leader Won't Run Again, Considers Sec. of State Bid

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Kris Kobach plans to step down as the Kansas Republican Party's chairman early next year and said today he's seriously considering a run for secretary of state in 2010.

Kobach also said he hasn't ruled out running for attorney general. Kobach announced he won't seek a second two-year term as GOP chairman, and his current term expires at the end of January.

He said he's accomplished his goals of improving the state GOP's operations, providing more aggressive support for its candidates this year and laying a strong foundation for candidates in 2010.

Kobach said he's interested in running for secretary of state because he has concerns about the potential for voter fraud in Kansas.

Kobach -- who holds degrees from Harvard and Yale and Oxford University in England -- served two years on Overland Park City Council.
