Police say a Union Pacific train struck and killed a person today in Lawrence.
Sergeant Paul Fellers said one person died, but no additional information was available about the victim's identity.
Union Pacific spokesman James Barnes said the mishap disabled the 129-car train headed from North Platte, Nebraska, to Kansas.
The conductor was unable to stop the train, which struck the person who was apparently trying to remove an object from the tracks.
Barnes said ``It looks like it was a tragic accident.''
The train was not derailed, and was being held for a couple of hours.
