Topeka's USD 501 Receives Another Charter School Application

Topeka's USD 501 has received another application for a charter school. Board attorney Joe Zima says it was submitted Monday.

The district has rejected at least three charter school applications since 2000. Previous applicants, belonging to the group Community First, lobbied for the historic Sumner Elementary School as the charter school location.

This new application states the Sumner school as a long-term location but in the short-term, the committee behind this application has toured a spot on southwest Clay. It's the former location of the Family Service and Guidance Center.

USD 501 school board members will hear a presentation on the plan during their meeting this Thursday.
