Sen. Brownback to Discuss Moving Detainees

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Sen. Sam Brownback has scheduled a news conference for Thursday to discuss reasons why Guantanamo Bay detainees should not be moved to Kansas.

The Republican senator will meet with reporters in Leavenworth, then tour the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth. Brownback has been a vocal opponent to efforts to close Guantanamo and bring the terrorist detainees to Kansas.

The U.S. is holding about 250 men on suspicion of terrorism or links to al-Qaida and the Taliban at the Guantanamo facility.

Brownback argues that the Leavenworth barracks lacks the appropriate space for the detainees.

Leavenworth community leaders also will answer questions on Thursday.
