HAYS, Kan. (AP) _ A Hays hamburger joint and longtime teen hangout is being torn down next week to make way for an apartment complex.
The restaurant first opened in 1950 as the Varsity Bowl drive-in, serving burgers and fries, as well as chicken and shrimp dinners. It became a meeting place for teenagers and was a turnaround point for young people cruising Main Street.
The eatery was so named because the builder planned to construct a bowling alley behind the business, but that plan never materialized. The restaurant gained popularity through the years, and eventually became Lomato's Pizza.
Overland Property Group bought Lomato's to build an apartment complex, and the pizza shop moved to another location. Demolition begins Wednesday.
