Kansas Harvest Nears End as Temperatures Drop

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ Kansas farmers are wrapping up their fall harvest as temperatures dropped below freezing across the state for most of the past week.

Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service reports Monday that 93 percent of the corn crop has been harvested. About 86 percent of the sorghum is in. The soybean harvest is at the 94 percent mark.

Sunflower harvest is also nearing the end with 86 percent of sunflowers harvested. Cotton harvest is 35 percent finished.

The agency says 95 percent of the 2009 winter wheat crop has now emerged. It rates its condition as 14 percent excellent, 60 percent good and 18 percent fair. About 8 percent is in poor to very poor condition.
