Group Proposes Lake Near Nebraska-Kansas Line

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ A Nebraska group wants to build a private lake near the Kansas border that would provide recreation and water for communities in both states.

The proposed 3,000-acre Legacy Lake would be near Pawnee City, Neb., around 25 miles north of Seneca in northeast Kansas. The group proposing the lake is the Auburn Lake Co., which says the project needs approval of several more permits to go forward.

Water for the lake will come from restricting the flow of Turkey Creek with a 4,100-foot earthen dam. The average depth of the lake would be 18 feet, with the deepest parts measuring 35 to 40 feet.

Group member Bryan Mellage said bass fishing legend and Nebraska native Denny Brauer will be a reservoir planning consultant to the project.
