The research center has sued the National Institutes of Health over the patent claims. In the lawsuit, the center says that Val Stella, a professor of pharmaceutical chemistry, and Wanda Waugh, a research assistant who retired in 1999, helped create the drug Velcade, but were not listed on two patents for it.
The research center's director, Steve Warren, says Stella and Waugh made it possible for the drug to be delivered to patients in a nontoxic way.
The NIH declined to comment on the lawsuit.
