Man Fires Gun at Police Officer

TOPEKA, Kan. - On November 21, 2008 at 12:41 AM, Topeka Police Sergeant Andy Langdon was responding to the 900 block of NW Western, where several shots of gunfire had just been heard.

Police say as SGT Langdon exited his marked black and white patrol car he rounded the corner of the first trailer of three located diagonally on the lot designated with an address of 924 NW Western. A male stepped out of trailer 924B NW Western looked towards SGT Langdon, pointed a handgun at him, and fired the gun. The male then stepped back inside the trailer.

SGT Langdon immediately called on his radio an “officer in danger” using a code known to emergency personnel as a Signal 13. SGT Langdon did not return fire, but rather sought cover to protect his person. A perimeter was set up within a couple of minutes. While this was being accomplished a female came out of the trailer towards officers. She was taken into custody.

Shortly after the female came out, a male exited and was ordered away from the trailer. He was taken into custody also. Then an additional male exited the trailer holding a bottle of beer and was ordered to set the bottle down and come away from the trailer.

The three subjects were interviewed to see if Topeka Police officers could determine if anyone else was still in the trailer. Neighbors who had witnessed what had been happened prior to the officers’ arrivals were also talked to. Officers received information that there was a newborn baby, the daughter of the female who had been taken into custody, left in the trailer. Believing there were no adults left in the trailer and fearing a child had been left in the trailer officers cautiously entered the trailer to make a protective sweep and take custody of the newborn. No child was found in the trailer. It became apparent the female’s 6 month old daughter was in the custody of a relative. Evidently, the female was in a confused state of mind.

A search warrant of the residence was executed to gather evidence.

Chris Patterson (DOB 4/29/79, 29 years of age) was charged with Aggravated Assault to a Law Enforcement Officer and Felony Obstruction and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections. Danneasia Stano (DOB 2/12/88, 20 years of age) was charged with Disobeying a Lawful Police Order and Interference and booked as well. The third male, Dane Taylor (DOB 7/11/82) was interviewed and booked into the DOC on warrants.
