The proposed area to be developed in downtown Topeka

Before their regular meeting, council members were briefed on plans to re-develop parts of Topeka's riverfront.

The river front authority told council members the plan has four phases.

Some would be accomplished soon, others will take generations.

One low cost, less timely plan includes a trail system that would go from downtown Topeka along the river to the Kaw River State Park.

Riverfront Authority Chairman Mike Hayden says there is no immediate timeline to implement the plan.

Hayden says it's a great opportunity to bring north Topeka and downtown Topeka together.
