WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ The new city manager of Wichita is Robert Layton, who currently is city manager of Urbandale, Iowa.

The Wichita City Council voted 4-3 Tuesday to offer the job to Layton. Urbandale is a city of 40,000 people near Des Moines. The 53-year-old Layton has served as city manager there since 1984.

He won out over two other finalists, Sedgwick County Manager William Buchanan and George Noe, the former city manager of Corpus Christi, Texas.

Officials will now begin contract negotiations with Layton for the job that oversees 3,100 employees and a $500 million annual budget.

Former City Manager George Kolb left the position in January.
