SW Missouri Baby Dies after Fire at Home

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) _ A 6-month-old girl has died of injuries she suffered in a fire at her home in southwest Missouri. The Vernon County Sheriff's Department said Taylor Shaner died Monday at children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, a day after fire swept her home south of Walker. Sheriff Ron Peckman said her father, Christopher Shaner, pulled the girl and a male toddler from the burning home.

Peckman said a state fire investigator and sheriff's deputies and are continuing their search for the cause of the fire. The sheriff said there may have been a space heater in use in the baby's bedroom that could have been a source of the fire.

Peckman said the father had put more wood in a stove before going outside to do some chores, and ran inside after spotting the fire.
