Affordable Housing Project Announced for Wamego

Senior citizens will soon have a new option for affordable housing in Wamego.

Homestead Affordable Housing announced a partnership Friday with Kansas Housing Resources Corporation, USDA Rural Development and Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka.

It'll bring 32 one- and two- bedroom apartments for seniors or families on fixed or low incomes to Wamego.

The facility will cost $5.2 million dollars, financed in part through local and federal tax credits. FHRC is allocating $4.6 million in federal housing tax credits plus $400,000 in home program funds to offset construction costs.

“The collaboration of federal, state and local agencies involved in this development is a fine example of community partnerships working together to provide services for an often neglected and high-need population,” Sheila Robles, KHRC Deputy Director of Rental Housing, said in a statement. “KHRC is happy to help bring additional housing to Wamego.”

Construction is set to begin in spring of 2009, with a grand opening tentatively planned for March 2010.
