HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) _ A central Kansas man gets life in prison for sexually assaulting and killing an 85-year-old woman.

The Hutchinson News reports on its Web site that Marvin Gifford Jr. of McPherson pleaded guilty Friday to capital murder in the fatal May 18 attack on Pearl Arthaud at her assisted-living apartment in Buhler.

He also pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting Arthaud, as well as to sexually assaulting two other elderly women in Reno County in April.

In exchange for his plea, prosecutors did not seek the death penalty.

Arthaud's murder and the sexual assaults put nursing homes in Reno County on edge at the time.
