Repeat Drunk Driver to Stand Trial in Deaths

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ A 54-year-old Wichita man with a history of driving drunk has been ordered to stand trial in the deaths of a woman and her young daughter as they walked to school.

Gary Hammitt on Wednesday waived his right to a preliminary hearing and will stand trial on two counts of second-degree murder, aggravated battery, reckless driving and driving under the influence. Hammitt remains jailed on $1 million bond.

Hammitt's SUV struck 37-year-old Claudia Mijares and her 4-year-old daughter Gisele as they were crossing the street near the girl's school.

Court records show Hammitt had four previous drunken driving convictions.

A Jan. 12 trial date was set.
