TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Former Topeka mayor Doug Wright is seeking redemption in the halls of Highland Park High School.
Wright led the city for six years beginning in 1983. But in 2003, he was sentenced to one-year is prison for stealing more than $100,000 from his great-aunt and others. The disbarred lawyer says he essentially misused the money he oversaw to tide him over while awaiting payouts on real estate deals.
Now almost 60, he is student teaching government classes at the poorest high school in the Topeka area.
The school's principal says he would consider hiring Wright. But it's unclear whether Wright will be able to get a teaching license.
Wright is hopeful. He says he's not proud of everything he's done in his past. But he says he's going to be defined by his entire life's body of work. And he says it's unfinished.
