Coffeyville Man Gets Life for Killing Woman

INDEPENDENCE, Kan. (AP) _ A southeast Kansas man will spend the
rest of his life in prison with no chance of parole for the March 2007 murder of a young mother.

Christopher Lowrance of Coffeyville was sentenced Thursday in the death of 23-year-old Rachel Dennis, whose body was found in the Verdigris River 11 days after she went missing. Lowrance was convicted of capital murder on Sept. 12.

The Kansas Attorney General's office had said it would not seek the death penalty.

At trial, Lowrance testified that he remembers throwing Dennis' body and her purse into the river but said he did not kill her. The 24-year-old Lowrance testified he was driving her home when he noticed she was dead.

Dennis, the mother of a 3-year-old boy, was last seen alive at a convenience store in Coffeyville.
