ST. LOUIS (AP) _ An off-duty St. Louis firefighter is shot and
killed while trying to help a carjacking victim in north St. Louis
County. Police later killed the suspect in a shootout.
The slain firefighter is identified as 52-year-old Leonard
Police say the events began Wednesday night when the gunman
carjacked a woman and drove off in her vehicle, eventually crashing
Riggins apparently thought the carjacker was the victim of a
wreck and tried to help him. But the suspect shot Riggins and took
his car, crashing that vehicle as well.
Police say the suspect was carjacking a third vehicle as
officers reached the scene. A shootout began after a brief chase,
and police shot and killed the man. His name has not been released.
