A local principal is honored for taking a bite out of obesity. Janine Kempker was presented Wednesday with the Hometown Health Hero Award at the Clarke Education Center in Topeka.

The award was established by Governor Kathleen Sebelius' Council on Fitness, all in support of the Healthy Kansas Initiative. Kempker is the principal at Anthony Elementary School in Leavenworth. She developed the "Eat, Exercise, Excel" program at the school in 2003. It focuses on improving nutrition and increasing physical activity.
