Three People Honored With Champion of Character Awards

Safe Streets Coalition and Topeka City of Character honored three people with the Champion of Character award for their efforts in stopping a crime.

Lamin Britt and Angela Gamber were on hand for a Wednesday ceremony honoring their efforts. A third person, Justin Newhouse, couldn't attend.

The trio witnessed an attempted robbery of a woman's purse at a shopping center. Britt confronted the the suspect and retrieved the purse. Newhouse assisted Britt in trying to stop the suspect, who was armed with a knife. Gamber used her car to block the suspect's vehicle.

The trio's efforts led to the arrest of the man.

While Safe Streets doesn't advocate citizens placing themselves in danger, the organization thought the group demonstrated character that significantly improves the health, safety and quality of life in the community.
