WINFIELD, Kan. (AP) _ The Winfield City Commission votes unanimously to outlaw smoking in all publicly accessible places in the city, but not before getting an earful from ban opponents.
Downtown area business owners said at the commission meeting Monday night that they fear the ban will cut into their profits. They called for an alternative to a citywide ban to accommodate smokers, who make up a large part of their revenue.
Mayor Mike Ledy said he was surprised to see all the opposition, since the possibility of the ban has been public knowledge for months. He said the ban covers building interiors, and that smokers can light up outside as long as they're 10 feet away from the entrance.
The ban was imposed after several revisions to the initial proposal put forth Feb. 28 by Clean Air Cowley County.
