"13 News at 4" saluted Veterans Day on its Election Day show. (After all, veterans have fought and died for our right to vote!) We were so appreciative of all four of our guests coming on the show Tuesday. We began with Diana Friend of the Topeka-Shawnee County Public Library, hosting its salute on Thursday, November 6th.
TOPEKA-SHAWNEE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY:
12:30-6:30pm: Military Displays on Library Grounds
See the displays of restored military vehicles, re-enactors and other war memorabilia from the World War I era through today. This is being presented through the courtesy of the Rolling Thunder Chapter of the Military Vehicle Preservation Association and the Kansas National Guard Traveling Museum.
3:00-4:30pm: Inside Marvin Auditorium
"The A.J. Davis Story".. A.J. Davis, who's now 95, will be there! See the new film documentary on World War II and Korea, the years that brought America together. Estelle Luttrell's docudrama film premieres in the Library's Marvin Auditorium at 3:00.
6:30pm: Marvin Auditorium
Welcoming ceremony with presentation of the colors and patriotic music. Guest speaker is Sabetha native, Colonel Roger C. Locher
Riley County Commissioner Mike Kearns says their events begin on Tuesday at 7:00am with a biscuits and gravy breakfast at VFW Post 1786, at 212 South 4th in Manhattan. Come hear the battlefield stories from the veterans who will be there. The event is open to all, and admission to the breakfast is $4.00.
9:30am: Manhattan Parade
The parade route heads west on Poyntz from the Mall to 14th Street past City Park. 1200 military men and women will march in the parade, which even includes a KC-135 flyover!
11:00am: Patriotic Ceremony
The salute ceremony will be held in Manhattan Town Hall. The keynote speaker is Brigadier General Perry Wiggins, Commanding General of the First Infantry and Fort Riley.
6:00pm: Veterans Banquet
The banquet is open all Veteran's Night at American Legion Post 17, 114 McCall Road.
AMERICAN LEGION POSTS BREAKFAST AND LUNCHEON:
Ralph also welcomed Brian Hatina of Post 400 and Sons of American Legion member Terry Vawter to the program. They're promoting the Post's Breakfast for veterans this Saturday, November 8th, from 7:00 until 11:00am.
(The location is 3029 NW Highway 24, Topeka, across from the Goodyear plant in Topeka.) They will also salute veterans with a Veterans Day Beef Stew Luncheon on Veterans Day, November 11th, at 11:00 am. The public is welcome, and it's also free to all veterans in the same location. Hope you can attend any or all of these events to salute our veterans!
