TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Kansas has set a record this year for the
number of people casting advance ballots.

The secretary of state's office said almost 420,000 advance
ballots had either been cast in person or mailed in the 105
counties. That breaks down to more than 283,000 mailed ballots and
more than 136,000 people voting in person.

By comparison, the previous record was in 2004, with 245,680
people doing advance voting either by mail or in person. Advance
voting started in 1996.

Sedgwick County reported the most mailed-in advance ballots,
followed by Johnson County.

Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh said Friday that he expects a
record turnout at the polls on Tuesday of 1.36 million voters, or
about 78 percent of those who are registered.
