Gay Candidate Loses in Kan. Ed Contest

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ An openly gay candidate for the State Board
of Education has lost his race against a conservative member, but a
coalition of moderates and Democrats continued to hold the
majority.

Democrat Christopher Renner of Manhattan lost to Republican Kathy Martin of Clay Center in the 6th District of northeast and north-central Kansas.

In other board races, two Democrats and a moderate Republican won and another Democrat was ahead with half the votes counted. That means the moderate coalition in January will either be 7-3 or the current 6-4 edge. Five members -- a Democrat, two conservatives and two moderates -- weren't up for re-election this year.
