OLATHE, Kan. (AP) _ A Johnson County commissioner accused of
stealing his opponent's campaign signs says he was only trying to
John Toplikar says he moved Calvin Hayden's two signs because
they were blocking his own.
And in a report filed Wednesday with Olathe police, Toplikar
says his campaign signs also have been stolen or destroyed.
Toplikar was cited for misdemeanor theft on Saturday after being
videotaped allegedly taking signs belonging Hayden, who's a retired
Toplikar says he pulled up the signs and tossed them into his
van so he could drive them to a van he thought was Hayden's to talk
Police found Hayden signs in Toplikar's vehicle and cited him
for misdemeanor theft.
