Dog's Beating Death Could Lead to Prosecution Under "Magnum's Law''

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ Wichita police are looking into the beating death of a dog that apparently was bashed with a hammer because of a fight between the dog's owner and her brother-in-law.

A Wichita woman says her brother-in-law told she could find her dog in a Dumpster at a local car wash on Tuesday. Police who responded to the scene after the woman located her dead pet found what is believed to be the hammer used to kill the animal.

Local officials say the case might qualify for prosecution under "Magnum's Law,'' named after a dog in the city that was badly beaten three years ago and later died. Under that law, animal abuse is a felony punishable by jail time and fines.
