WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ A Wichita man who helped the Kaweah Indian Nation process membership applications will spend no time his prison.

Britton Bergman was sentenced Tuesday morning to six months in a halfway house followed by six months of home detention. He also received two years probation. Prosecutors say his help in the case against the Kaweah's leader deserves consideration.

Prosecutors contend the Kaweah Indian Nation is a fake tribe that falsely claimed membership conferred U.S. citizenship.

Bergman pleaded guilty in July to encouraging illegal immigrants to live in the United States.

Bergman says he was scammed just like everybody else. He says his family and friends know he would not purposely do something wrong.
